De Britten & Bin Laden

Zoals het er nu steeds meer naar uitziet waren het wel degelijk behoorlijk gesophisticeerde, ‘plastic’ explosieven, voorzien van tijdontstekers. Geen wonder dat die gast op die bus zenuwachtig werd. Dat is wellicht ook degene die post mortem een spoor naar de andere daders vormt. En dat waren dan wel profi’s – en geen copy-cats, zoals de veronderstelling tot nu toe luidde.

Juan Cole geeft een analyse van de eerste opeisingsbrief. Volgens hem zitten er Egyptische trekjes aan:

“My guess is that the author of the statement is Egyptian or Sudanese, with some sort of intellectual genealogy in the radical fringes of the Muslim Brotherhood, perhaps al-Zawahiri’s al-Jihad al-Islami.”

Op electronic iraq een media-analyse, die alle misconcepties weer eens afgaat. De slotsom:

“It does not need to be said that bin Laden’s ‘an eye for an eye’ approach to civilian deaths is neither morally nor legally acceptable. JNV has no wish or intention to defend bin Laden’s approach. We condemn it. The point we are making is that it is simply not true to say that bin Laden and his networks have no political objectives or motivations, or that they will not be satisfied until everyone in the world subscribes to their particular extremist brand of Islam. The point we are making is that the British people and the British government can do something to reduce the appeal of bin Laden’s campaign, and to bring the attacks to an end…”
